Who will benefit from allergy shots?

Allergy shots can be used to lessen the symptoms of environmental allergies such as pollen, dust, mold, pet dander, insect venom, and grass. If you have a hard time avoiding these allergens and your allergies are limiting your daily activities, allergy shots could be the perfect treatment for you. Allergy shots offer a long-term solution to symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, red or itchy eyes, coughing, or itchy skin. You may be a candidate for allergy shots if:

  • You can’t avoid the things you are allergic to, or doing so impacts your quality of life.
  • Oral medications don’t control your symptoms effectively, or they give you too many side effects.
  • You would rather treat the cause of your symptoms than control your symptoms with medications.

Achieve long-term relief

Allergic reactions occur when your immune system overreacts to a generally harmless substance. Your immune system produces antibodies to fight this substance, leading to the symptoms you know as an allergic reaction. Allergy shots work on a basis similar to vaccines. By introducing a small amount of an allergen, the shots help your body gradually develop a tolerance to it.

    How are the shots administered?

Allergy shots are given subcutaneously (under the skin) using a tiny needle. At the beginning of your immunotherapy treatment, you’ll be visiting your doctor at the SFENTA office in Boca Raton once or twice a week. For the next few months, the dose of the allergen (such as dust, pollen, or pet dander) will gradually increase until you reach the maximum dosage.

Once this has been reached, the frequency of your shots will decrease until you are getting one shot per month. This will continue for about three to five years.

Your SFENTA doctor will provide you with a customized treatment plan to achieve the best possible results for your unique circumstances.

When should I expect to notice the results?

This varies significantly from person to person. Some patients start noticing improvements within the first few weeks. Generally, you should expect a significant reduction in symptoms within six to twelve months.
