What Does Balloon Sinuplasty Treat?

Nearly 30 million Americans are affected by sinusitis. In cases of acute sinusitis, the condition responds to medication or disappears on its own. But if your sinusitis persists despite treatment or if it tends to come back repeatedly, you may be dealing with chronic sinusitis. Symptoms of sinusitis include congestion, headaches, difficulty breathing through your nose, and pain behind the eyes, nose or cheeks. If you are unsure whether you are dealing with chronic sinusitis and would like to know if you are a candidate for balloon sinuplasty, contact our board-certified ear, nose and throat specialists.

What Are the Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty?

In the past, the main treatment options for chronic sinusitis were medication and surgery. If medication didn’t work, surgery was your only option. When balloon sinuplasty came along in 2005, it revolutionized the way we treat chronic sinusitis. A balloon sinuplasty:

  • Doesn’t require any surgery or incisions, making recovery easy and pain-free.
  • Provides immediate and long-lasting relief. Most patients notice improvements in their breathing immediately, and results last for up to 2 years.
  • Only takes about an hour, and you can go home again on the same day.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Balloon sinuplasty is a straightforward procedure that is usually pain-free and doesn’t involve any major discomfort. You will be seated in a reclining chair in your doctor’s office. We will administer IV sedation and a topical anesthetic.

Using a small catheter, we will guide a little balloon through your nostril to the blocked area of your sinuses. Once it is in place, we will inflate the balloon to clear away the blockage. You may experience a slight pressure. After flushing the area with saline, we will deflate and remove the balloon, at which point your balloon sinuplasty is complete.

How Long Will It Take Me To Recover?

Recovery after balloon sinuplasty is usually fast and smooth. You will be able to go home on the same day as your procedure, and most people can return to work within 1-2 days. You may experience some light congestion during the first few days. Sleeping with your head elevated will help with drainage. You should plan to take it easy for a week or so, avoiding any strenuous exercise.
