Do your allergies interfere with your daily life?

Over 50 million people in the US suffer from some type of allergy. Whether you’re allergic to pollen, dust, molds, pet dander, or insect bites, allergies can impact your quality of life and limit your activities. If you have a hard time avoiding your allergy triggers, allergy shots may help decrease your symptoms and provide lasting relief. You may be a candidate for allergy shots if:

  • You suffer from seasonal or environmental allergies.
  • Avoiding your allergy triggers is difficult or impossible.
  • Oral medications don’t resolve your symptoms.
  • You want to be less dependent on allergy medications.

Improve your allergies by training your immune system

An allergic reaction is your body’s immune response to a substance that it considers dangerous. Your immune system identifies a foreign substance and produces antibodies against it. These antibodies give you your typical allergy symptoms: a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, or itchy skin. With allergy shots, your immune system is gradually exposed to a known allergen. This builds up an immunity to it. Each of your allergy shots will contain a small amount of your allergy trigger, such as mold, dust, pollen, or pet dander. As the dose increases, your tolerance to the substance increases as well.

How often will I need to get shots?

At SFENTA, our allergists in West Palm Beach customize all treatment plans, with the use of individual allergy testing, to achieve the best possible outcome for you. Your treatment plan will depend on your individual circumstances and needs. Most likely, you will begin your treatment with one or two shots per week. Each shot will contain enough of the allergy trigger to stimulate an immune response, but not enough to cause a full-blown allergic reaction. This amount will gradually be increased until you reach the maximum dosage, also referred to as the maintenance dose. At this point, the frequency of your shots will decrease until you are getting about one shot per month.

What are the benefits?

Rather than just suppressing your symptoms, allergy shots address the cause of your allergies. As your immune system learns to tolerate the allergen, the necessity to avoid your triggers vanishes, and you can enjoy more freedom in your daily life.

Other benefits include:

  • Allergy shots can treat multiple allergies at the same time.
  • Decrease your reliance on oral medications.
  • Results are long-term.
  • Effective for a variety of allergies, including pollen, dust, insect venom, and pet dander.
  • May also improve asthma symptoms and inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema.
