Sinus Surgery, What Is It?

Sinus surgery can correct anatomical defects that contribute to chronic sinus infections. By widening the openings of the sinuses and removing obstructions such as polyps, sinus surgery can help improve drainage and reduce the likelihood of infection. Additionally, sinus surgery can help to improve airflow and reduce inflammation. For those who have unsuccessfully tried other treatments, sinus surgery may be a worthwhile option to consider.

What Is the Procedure for Sinus Surgery?

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is used to treat sinusitis and other sinus conditions. The goal of the surgery is to open the sinuses so that they can drain properly. This is accomplished by making small incisions in the tissue around the sinuses and then using a tiny camera, called an endoscope, to remove any obstructions. In most cases, ESS can be performed using local anesthesia and does not require a hospital stay.

How Long Is the Recovery From Sinus Surgery?

ESS is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and most people can go home the same day. The recovery from endoscopic sinus surgery typically takes between one and two weeks. During this time, it is important to rest and avoid strenuous activity. Most people will experience some discomfort and congestion for a few days after surgery, but this usually subsides within a week. Overall, the recovery from endoscopic sinus surgery is relatively quick and uneventful.

Sinus Surgery FAQ

How long will the surgery take?

The length of the surgery depends on the extent of the condition being treated, but it typically lasts for one to two hours. Following surgery, patients usually experience some congestion and drainage from the nose for a few days. However, this should gradually improve over time as the swelling from the surgery subsides. With proper care and follow-up, ESS can provide lasting relief from sinus problems for many people.

Do I need sinus surgery?

Sinus surgery may be needed if you have chronic sinusitis and medical treatment has not helped. The main goal of sinus surgery is to improve drainage from your sinuses. This will help to reduce infection and relieve your symptoms. Sinus surgery may also be needed if a nose blockage prevents proper drainage. This can be caused by a deviated septum, polyps, or tumors. Surgery can also be used to remove these blockages. If you have chronic sinusitis and medical treatment has not helped, talk to your doctor about whether sinus surgery might be an option for you.
