What Is Sinusitis?

When should you seek sinusitis treatment? Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled cavities in the skull (bones of the head) that open into the nasal passages. Normally, they produce thin mucus that drains out through the nose. When a person has sinusitis, the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen. The openings to the sinuses may become blocked, and mucus builds up inside.

What Causes Sinusitis?

Sinusitis can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungi. It can also be caused by allergies, pollution, smoke, or structural problems in the nose. Most cases of sinusitis are mild and resolve on their own without treatment. However, some people develop severe or chronic (long-term) sinusitis that does not improve with self-care measures. In these cases, additional treatment may be necessary.

What Kinds of Sinusitis Treatments Are There?

There are several different chronic sinusitis treatments available. These include:

  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Pain relievers
  • Steroids
  • Saline sprays
  • Antibiotics

Some people also find relief by using a humidifier or taking a hot shower.

  • Help to relieve symptoms
  • Speed up recovery
  • These medications can help to reduce swelling and mucus production, making it easier to breathe

Sinusitis Treatment FAQ

How do I know if my sinusitis is chronic?

Chronic sinusitis is a condition that characteristically lasts for more than 12 weeks or keeps coming back. The main symptoms are a blocked nose, runny nose, and facial pain. Most people with chronic sinusitis also have inflammation (swelling) of the lining of the inside of the nose, as well as thick, yellow, or green mucus draining from the nose. However, some people can have few symptoms even though they have a lot of inflammation.

Do I need surgery?

Surgery is rarely needed to treat sinusitis but is a good option for people with chronic or recurring sinusitis that does not respond to other treatments. One of our highly trained ENTs can help you determine the best course of action for your situation.
